The authors talk about the “God gulf.” Describe an example of it from the book. Why does each side believe they are right? Can you think of ways to get each side to listen to the other?
In the Book the author mentioned representative Chris Smith, a New Jersey Republican, and his attack on UNFPA funding because UNFPA gave their Population Award gold medal to Qian Xinzhong, the head of the Chinese coercive family planning program. As a result UNFPA had to cease many of its humanitarian operations, which may have indirectly lead to 10 million abortions in china.
Chris Smith did what he did because Qian Xinzhong's program is brutal and forced many Chinese women to abort their children. He knows that forcing people to abort their children is a heinous crime against humanity. However, it may have led to even more abortions in china.
Chris Smith was not wrong for supporting the cutting of funding for UNFPA, he was wrong for not offering an alternative. If he had moved the money to an organization that would be more socially acceptable and those children would not have to have died. KC5728
