Forced Prostitution

In chapter one, we read about Meena, a young woman in India who was forced into prostitution when she was 8 or 9 years old. She attempts to and escapes many times, only to be brought back to brothel. She had to initially leave her children there until she could rescue them. What keeps women dependent of the brothel owners? Why was Meena a success? What would you do if you were asked to go there and solve this problem?

In some countries, rape plays a role in shaping women’s lives. Why is rape so rarely reported?

  1. Chapter one was very sad. it has revealed the living and suffering of some people We can't make imagine for that. In my opinion, sometimes no one can give an explanation or justification for someone behavior. We did not live under the same Conditions. We are outside these events we can't make a explanation for Meena situation. She got the success because she wants that and she tried until she got it. It is a big issue. The government should do something for these people. The solution of this problem is bigger than Individuals.

  2. Chapter 1 was a definite tear-jerker. The sex slavery industry is horrible. No human being should be subject to that type of treatment involuntarily. The reason I believe women become dependent on the brothel owners has to do with the country's social and economic structure. India vs the USA for example. India is a male dominated society in the sense where males have more advantages in most aspects of life within India over females. The women who work at brothels also don't have very many options to choose from. Most men won't want to marry an ex-prostitute, whether she became one by choice or not, I believe that the typical average Indian man will choose not to take a non-virgin bride. If the women try to leave they will get beaten, drugged, and most likely beaten again.
Meena succeeded where others have not because of perseverance and a stroke of luck. She refused to give up until she had her child back into her hands and was lucky that she was able to contact someone from an organization that was able to provide help for her, and to find a kind soul such as her husband to marry and support her as well.
If I were asked to go and solve this problem I would probably have to make a few friends first, friends with positions of power within the Indian government that I could get to forcefully stop the brothel industry through enactment of legislature and enforcement by the police / military.
I'm not exactly sure as to why rape is so rarely reported. My opinion on the matter is that rape victims are ashamed and become anti-social in a sense where they spend a good amount of time brooding over the dastardly deed. Or perhaps the whole deal mentally scarred the victim into blocking out of her subconscious entirely and perhaps she forced herself (or himself) to forget the matter completely.

  3. In my opinion, the reason why women become dependent of the brothel owners is because during their time at the brothel, the women were drugged raped, and down right degraded for so long that it became their way of life; their social norm. When the women tried to escape this lifestyle, they realized that the people outside the brothel would not accept them into their society. The women then had no choice except to return to the place they once escaped.

Meena is a special case. Meena had so much motivation and she had an extreme sense of dedication. She was so dedicated to get her kids back from the brothel and the determination was her guiding light. Meena also married a good husband who helped her in her goal. Meena went to a organization against sexual slavery for help. Through this organization, Meena managed to get the police involved. The police then raided the brothel and Meena successfully got her children back from the brothel; a feat which is very rare.

If i were to go to one of these brothels and try and solve these problems, i would probably start by attempting to get the police's attention. Being a man, i would automatically have a higher status in this society. Im not using this to promote bigotry i'm simply stating a fact. With this status advantage, the police would be more inclined to listen to me to get this brothel abolished for good.

Rape is rarely reported because the rape usually happens to women in the lowest class of these societies. The police are corrupt and they are bribed by the brothel services or they themselves are customers to the brothel service.

  4. I think that the women were dependent on the brothel because it was the only real thing they have every known. Without a real place to live the brothel is the only real sense of stability the women have in life. It was a place the women could leave there children that was somewhat safe for them. Although it seems like a terrible place to keep one's children it is definitely safer than living homeless.
Meenna is a considered a success because she had courage enough to take down the brothel. When she escaped she got involved with a company that was against punishing of women unfairly. They helped to get the police involved who eventually did away with the brothel and they were able to retrieve her children.
If I were asked to solve this problem, I would simply shut the brothels down. If something is detrimental to people than it needs to be shutdown, simple as that.

  5. Once women enter a brothel they are broken emotionally, physically, but mostly mentally. Brothel owners know how to manipulate them and create a strong power over them. This is why women become dependent over them. Through drug addictions, fear, pressure, humiliation, threats, corruption, etc. brothel owners maintain control over girls like Meena. Although the brothel owners threatened Meena by keeping her children, Meena’s persistence and hope for a better life drove her to escape. She was strong enough to leave her children behind, but also strong enough to get them back. She also couldn’t have done it with out help from the man who is now her husband.
If it were up to me, I would definitely illegalize brothels and sex traffiking. And I think that women rarely report when they are raped because they really don’t have support. When the entire society oppresses women, including the police, women who are raped probably feel like nothing can be done or like they can’t go to anyone to get help.

  6. It’s rarely reported because a majority of times officers won’t believe them and instead they’d go to jail for no reason. And if they are caught telling then their life will be in even more danger than before.

Women are dependent on the brothels because they are too scared to leave and some brothels drug them and they are dependent on the drug which inadvertently makes them depend on the brothel. I’d try and cleanse them from that situation. Kind of offer that support and help to rid their body of those drugs so they can be independent. Also due to lack of education, brothels may be the only thing women know to make a living.

Meena is a special case since she devoted herself to taking down brothels. She looked back to help others and to diminish the dominance of brothels. She got involved with a group that wanted to enact this change and with her involvement and help, cracking down brothels and saving girls/children is improving.

  7. These women such as Meena are often dependent upon the brothels because they have no where left to turn and they don't know anything else. Many of these women are captured very young and they grow up in the environment and are not exposed to anything else. Many of these women are disconnected from their families early on and don't have anywhere else to turn if they were to leave. If these women left the brothels many of them would be homeless and probably be left to die.

The reason why Meena was such a success was because she actually found somewhere to go and confide in once she left the brothel. She also had the drive to get out and she wouldn't take no for an answer. The reason why its hard for many to leave is because they are not only influenced emotionally but physically as well. Many women are sometimes given drugs and become addicted. Meena was able to avoid things like this and actually had the drive in order to leave this environment. Meena eventually married and was able to find someone who cared for her no matter what her past was which is something very rare for women leaving the brothel.Meena showed that determination is the key and you should never give up no matter the circumstances.

If I was to go to a place like this I would first handle all of the crooked police that are in the area. The crooked cops are the majority of the reason why rape occurs so frequently and why many of these brothels are still in business. Many of these cops are being paid by brothel owners which protect them and ignore claims made by women being raped. Once the protection for these brothel owners are gone, the brothels may be taken down and the women liberated. Next rehabilitation centers must be created for the many women who suffer from drug addiction as a result of being in a brothel. Once all this is done organizations can be put in place to offer better opportunities for these women and help them have similar stories to Meena.

  8. Brother owners use many brutal and unethical means to keep girls from running away. Some were captured when they were young and were made dependent on brothel. They are humiliated, raped, and beaten to the point where they are outcast from their community. Some are drugged heavily so they wouldn't leave the brothel because withdrawal symptoms would bring them right back. In Meena's case, she was impregnated and gave birth to two children. Her children were kept captive as a mean to keep her from running away. However, she had to run away because brothel owners were threaten to kill her. Meena successfully escaped and retrieved her children because she was able to get married to a wealthy man in her society and found organization that helped her fought against the brothel. If i were to solve this problem, i would restrain sex-trafficking by strengthening police authority because in Meena's story, police officers didn't care about the issue and some of them are customers of the brothel.

  9. Drugs, fear for their children’s wellbeing, and constant degradation from brothel owners keep women dependent upon them. Many girls, at a very young age, are drugged to keep them compliant, so they grow dependent upon the drugs for normal function. Their source for the drugs, unfortunately, are the brothel owners. In Meena’s case, she had two kids and didn’t want to leave them, especially her daughter, so she stayed longer. Also, many brothel owners beat the girls, saying that no one cares about them and that they would be killed if they run. The fear of being caught and having no where else to go holds them back.

Meena was a success because she found the courage to run and met a man who supported her cause. She wasn’t intimidated by the threats from the brothel owners and remained persistent.

Many might find my presence intrusive, but I would try to get the police to stop acting incompetent and get them to shut down brothels. After the brothels are shut down, we might need to create programs to help mothers and children with drug addiction and help find sustainable jobs for them.

In some countries, it’s dangerous to report a rape because of the possible retaliation from the rapist and the corruption in the police force. The worst part is that the police, in order to invoke fear in the victim, will actual rape the victim because it’s considered disrespectful and gutsy for a woman to report the crime.

  10. Women are dependent of brothel owners because they provide them with the means to live; protection, shelter, food and drugs etc. Running away from such a system is not only humiliating but extremely hard- what brothel owner is going to let their product just walk out on them? As horrible as it is, its bad for business. Meena is a special case because not only did she escape the brothels but devoted herself to shutting them down.

  11. Women are dependent of the brothel owners because they are terrified to leave and often have no way to live outside of the brothel. Brothel owners continuously abuse the women in an attempt to “break” them. They are often successful in making the women believe they deserve nothing better and need the brothel. The abuse is done in a way to make the women feel insignificant and helpless. Meena was a success because no matter how badly she was abused, she never gave up trying to escape. When Meena finally escaped, she made a job for herself in order to support herself so that she would never have to go back to the brothel. If I were asked to go there and solve this problem I would get the government to do their job in protecting their people, and shut down the brothels. I would also create jobs for women so that they are not forced to go into a brothel. Finally, I would raise awareness about brothels in order to gain supporting for shutting them down.
Rape is so rarely reported for many reasons, one of these reasons being that women are afraid to tell. In many countries they could be raped more, abused, or even killed for accusing a man of raping them. Secondly, women have become accustomed to rape. In some cultures, it seems so prevalent that it is almost the norm and accepted by society. They are very few means for help if any and many feel like it’s not even worth fighting against.

  12. Women can be kept dependent on brothel owners because they have no other life outside the brothel after they are taken in. Brothel owners also psychologically make the women believe that this is the only thing they are good for, and take away their motivation to fight the brothel system. Meena was a success because she was brave enough to do what most women are not brave enough to do, which is fight the brothel system. She was motivated and driven enough to get the brothel system she was in to be shut down so she could get her children back. If I were to be given the task to end this, I would increase investigations and the police force to locate brothels and shut them down immediately, and get as many shut down in the shortest amount of time possible. Rape can be seen as taboo, and can be so rarely reported because in some countries, in a twisted way, rape is seen as something that is just a truth and a way of life that cannot be stopped and is therefore accepted.

  13. The reason these women were so dependent on the brothel was because that's all they ever knew. in Meena's case she was forced into it at the young age of 8, so that's all she has ever known. The people that take these young girls and force them into this brothel basically brainwash these females to think there really isn't anything better out there for them that this is all they can do, they break them mentally and emotionally. Meena was a success because she had other plans for herself, regardless of how hard they tried to force her into the life she was in she knew that that was not the life she wanted to live. She was brave enough to try and get out, not only for herself but for her children sake also. If i were to be given the task to end this vicious act I would have an investigation set out so that we can shut down this brothels as soon as we find out about them, where they are and have the leaders of this horrible thing go to prison for life.

  14. I honestly could not stand this chapter. As greatly as it was portrayed through her writing, my feelings were honestly hurt. I have two older sisters, and hearing anything about the sex slave industry and other things that i would never want my sister's exposed to really hurt and bothered me. I hate that these young girls aren't given options to save themselves. They have no ability to take up there own fight. There mentally and physically defeated before they even have a chance to stand up for themselves.
